A sci-fi mystery about psionic agent Nova, with timing-based fights, gear modules, and a CRT filter on PC and PS5.
Parasite Eve is one of the games I remember most fondly for how innovative it was, both in its combat system and its horror-driven narrative. Today, I’m introducing a game that clearly draws inspiration from it, right down to its name.
It’s called Parasite Mutant and is a sci-fi survival horror RPG from solo developer IceSitruuna, built around a third-person mix of exploration, story scenes, and a timing-focused battle system.

The player follows Nova, a psionic agent sent to investigate an abandoned island city. The setup leans into mystery and body horror, with Nova digging through the ruins while the case unravels into something bigger than a simple rescue or clean-up job.
The most concrete gameplay hook is the combat. IceSitruuna calls it ATC, short for Active Time Chains, and frames it as a late 1990s style Active Time Battle idea rebuilt around a three part chain gauge.
Each fight asks the player to read timing windows and commit to actions as the gauge cycles, then decide when to cash out energy for a chain release. Defensive plays out with Nova that can dodge attacks while the gauge fills, which puts footwork into what would normally be a pure command loop.

A classic ATB flow often becomes a race to fill bars faster than the enemy. Here, the chain structure turns each turn into a small execution test. You are not only choosing a skill, but you are also choosing when to spend, when to hold, and whether the safer play is to move and dodge to keep the chain alive.
Nova can attach modules to equipment, then improve that equipment using Plus Points earned through combat. The name makes it sound like a currency that rewards clean play and steady fights, and it gives the developer room to tune growth without forcing constant loot swaps.
There is a New Game Plus mode, with Plus Points carrying over into a new run and unlocking new locations tied to a final challenge. In terms of aesthetics, Nova can swap hairstyles, hair colors, outfits, and other appearance options.

The base look of the game is a semi-realistic anime style with modern lighting, but the game includes a retro filter plus a CRT filter to push it closer to late 1990s and early 2000s vibes when you want that mood. That kind of toggle is not just nostalgia dressing.
A free demo is already out, released January 6, 2026, and it is meant as a straight slice of the real game. The developer says the trailer footage for the project was built from assets that appear in the demo, and the demo itself includes a tutorial plus early story content with an explorable area.
The estimate given is about 45 minutes, and the developer pegs it at roughly 5 percent of the full game. Patch notes for the demo show the kind of nuts and bolts work happening behind the scenes, including adjustments to a boss battle camera, a heating mini game with temperature checks, an in-game music player, and fixes for combat behavior tied to EP recovery after pausing.
Parasite Mutant is confirmed for PC and PlayStation 5, with the PC release positioned for Steam and GOG. A 2026 launch window has been reported for PS5 and PC, though the developer has not yet locked a specific day. Below is the new trailer.
