A few hours ago, I finished the demo for the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance. Needless to say, I absolutely loved it, and now I can’t wait for October 22 to finally play the full adventure.
But beyond getting me even more excited for a new turn-based chapter in the Final Fantasy series, it also reignited my passion for JRPGs in general. So this morning, I decided to take a look at some of Square Enix’s best games and, almost by chance, I noticed that there are some huge discounts running across the catalog right now.
So, if you still have a little room left in your Steam library, get ready. Below, I’ve picked out some of the best JRPGs you can add to your collection, with discounts reaching up to 75%, meaning you can grab some real classics for very little.
And who knows, maybe they’ll help you get in the mood for the arrival of Final Fantasy Resonance too.
Pretty much the entire Square Enix catalog is discounted on Steam right now, but these are the 17 games I decided to highlight. Let me know what you think.
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster – 60% Off

Its Conditional Turn-Based Battle system was one of the best in the series, letting you choose actions without a timer pushing you forward, and you could swap party members during combat to bring in someone better suited to the enemy. Character development takes place on the Sphere Grid, where activating nodes unlocks abilities and improves attributes.
The package also includes Final Fantasy X-2, which takes a different approach to party development. Its Dressphere system lets Yuna and her companions change jobs during battle, giving you another set of class combinations to experiment with. Getting both adventures together makes this a particularly substantial addition to the sale roundup.
Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age – 70% Off

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is not a standard turn-based game but obviously deserves to be here, because it is one of the best in the series.
Enemies appear directly in the environments, and the party fights through a combination of manual commands and the Gambit system. Gambits let you establish rules for each character, such as healing an ally when their health falls below a chosen threshold or prioritizing a particular target.
The Zodiac Job system adds class-based character development, while optional hunts give you additional enemies to pursue across Ivalice. At 70% off, this is another sizable adventure for considerably less than its regular price.
Chrono Trigger – 50% Off

A trip through Square Enix’s back catalog would feel incomplete without Chrono Trigger. Its time-travel adventure takes Crono and his companions through prehistoric landscapes, medieval kingdoms, and a devastated future, with each period contributing to the larger mystery. The changing settings give the journey plenty of variety without requiring a lengthy explanation before the adventure gets moving.
Battles use an Active Time Battle system, with particular attention to Tech abilities. Two or three characters can contribute to a single combination attack, and enemy positioning affects which targets certain abilities can catch.
That gives you a reason to experiment with different party members beyond their individual strengths. The PC release also includes the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons, alongside an autosave feature.
Triangle Strategy – 60% Off

The difficult decisions in Triangle Strategy extend well beyond the battlefield. At key moments, your companions vote on the group’s next move through the Scales of Conviction, and persuading them can change the direction of the story. Your choices also shape Serenoa’s convictions and influence which characters join the group.
On tactical maps, elevation, terrain, and positioning all deserve attention. Attacking from advantageous locations and coordinating with nearby allies can trigger follow-up attacks, while each recruit brings a distinct set of abilities.
There is plenty to consider when deciding who to deploy and how to move them across the battlefield. Perfectly suited for those who enjoy branching stories alongside grid-based combat.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – 60% Off

Leading one party through an adventure is familiar territory. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven instead follows an empire across generations, with successive rulers inheriting abilities from their predecessors. You recruit characters from more than 30 classes, choose which regions to investigate, and make decisions that affect how the campaign develops.
This remake presents battles through a visible turn-order timeline. Characters can discover new techniques during combat through Glimmers, while formations provide different benefits depending on how you arrange the party.
United Attacks add another way to coordinate your characters’ actions. The generational structure is what I love the most here. Developing the empire and choosing its next ruler remain important throughout the adventure. Multiple difficulty settings also provide some flexibility when approaching its systems.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered – 60% Off

Character development takes a different approach in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. Guardian Forces unlock commands and allow magic to be junctioned to character statistics, so the spells you collect can improve the party as well as provide options during combat.
Magic comes from drawing it from enemies and other sources, or refining items through the appropriate abilities. Learning how those systems interact gives you considerable freedom when preparing your characters.
There is also Triple Triad, the card game that can become quite a distraction from Squall’s main adventure. The remaster updates character visuals and includes conveniences such as a three-times speed option, battle assistance, and the ability to disable random encounters. Those additions are especially useful for anyone returning to the game after a long absence.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition – 50% Off

One of my above-all favorites is, for sure, Dragon Quest XI S. You follow the Luminary across Erdrea, gathering companions and fighting through turn-based encounters as the story develops. This is a standalone entry, so there is no need to catch up on the earlier Dragon Quest games before starting.
The Definitive Edition includes additional character-focused stories, English and Japanese voices, and a choice between orchestral and original music. It also lets you experience the adventure in either modern 3D or a retro-styled 2D mode.
Adjustable battle speed helps move familiar encounters along, while the Draconian Quest options introduce extra challenges for anyone seeking a more demanding playthrough. There is a generous demo as well, with progress carrying into the full game.
Octopath Traveler – 70% Off

Eight protagonists, eight different stories, and one of the games that helped establish Square Enix’s HD-2D visual style. Octopath Traveler lets you choose your starting character and gradually recruit the remaining travelers as you explore Orsterra.
Combat uses the Break and Boost systems. Enemy weaknesses can be targeted to reduce their shield points and leave them vulnerable, while accumulated Boost Points can strengthen attacks and abilities or let a character act several times. Party composition becomes increasingly important as more jobs, skills, and combinations become available.
At $17.99, it is a much easier recommendation for anyone who skipped the first game and later discovered the series through Octopath Traveler II.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake – 35% Off

The first two adventures in the Erdrick Trilogy return together in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, with completely redesigned visuals and several additions to the original games.
Both remain traditional turn-based JRPGs, with exploration divided between towns, overworld areas, dungeons, and random encounters. Dragon Quest II naturally expands the formula with a full party, a larger world, and more options during combat.
The remake also adds new story material and gameplay elements, including the Princess of Cannock as an additional party member in Dragon Quest II. The 35% discount brings the package down to $38.99.
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles – 40% Off

If job systems are your thing, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is easily one of the highlights of the sale.
Battles take place on grid-based maps, but the strong point here is how you develop your units. There are more than 20 jobs to unlock, and abilities learned from one class can continue to be used after changing to another, giving you plenty to experiment with.
This edition includes an enhanced version with voiced dialogue, interface improvements, updated visuals, and several quality-of-life changes. The classic version is also included for anyone who wants an experience closer to the original. At 40% off, the standard edition is currently $29.99.
Final Fantasy IX – 70% Off

For just over six dollars, this might be the easiest game on the list to add to your library.
Final Fantasy IX follows Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, Steiner, and a memorable cast through one of the series’ more traditional fantasy worlds. Battles use the classic Active Time Battle system, with every character having a clearly defined role and set of abilities.
Character progression is closely connected to equipment. Weapons and armor teach abilities, and keeping an item equipped long enough allows the character to permanently learn its associated skill.
The Steam version also includes useful additions such as high-speed mode, autosaving, and the option to disable random encounters. At $6.29, it is the cheapest JRPG in this selection.
Lost Sphear – 75% Off

Lost Sphear gets the biggest percentage reduction of the games selected here, dropping from $49.99 to $12.49.
Developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio behind I Am Setsuna, it follows a young swordsman named Kanata who discovers that entire parts of the world are disappearing. His ability to recover lost memories becomes the key to restoring them.
Combat uses the ATB 2.0 system and gives you some freedom to move characters before performing attacks. Positioning can therefore help catch multiple enemies with a single ability or move someone away from danger.
Characters can also use Vulcosuits, mechanical armor that grants additional abilities during combat and exploration. It is a fairly traditional JRPG at heart, making it one of the more interesting options if you are looking for something inspired by the genre’s older classics.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars – 60% Off

Everything in Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is represented through cards. Characters, enemies, towns, equipment, and even the world itself appear on a virtual tabletop while a Game Master narrates the adventure.
Underneath that unusual presentation is a fairly traditional turn-based JRPG. You control a party of characters, manage resources, equip weapons, and fight monsters using abilities that consume gems generated during battle.
The project also brought together several familiar names from the NieR series, including creative director Yoko Taro, composer Keiichi Okabe, and character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka. It is currently 60% off at $11.99.
Bravely Default II – 70% Off

Few JRPGs give you as much freedom when creating character builds as Bravely Default II.
Every party member can equip a main and secondary job, mixing abilities from different classes to create specialized setups. New jobs are obtained by defeating Asterisk holders, so the number of possible combinations steadily grows throughout the adventure.
Combat gets its name from the Brave and Default commands. Default lets a character defend while storing Brave Points, while Brave spends those points to perform several actions in succession.
Saving BP for the right moment can let you heal the party, set up buffs, or unleash several attacks before the enemy gets another chance to react. At 70% off, the price drops from $59.99 to $17.99.
Dungeon Encounters – 70% Off

Don’t expect elaborate environments or lengthy cinematic sequences from Dungeon Encounters. This is a very focused dungeon crawler where exploration, combat, equipment, and party preparation take priority.
The dungeon contains 99 floors presented almost like a tabletop grid. Moving across each tile gradually reveals the map, while numbered spaces can trigger battles, shops, events, or other discoveries.
Combat uses an Active Time Battle system, and finding the right equipment and abilities becomes increasingly important as you descend. You can also discover lost adventurers and add them to your roster, giving you more options when assembling the party.
Its minimalist presentation certainly won’t be for everyone, but at $8.99 it is one of the cheapest games in the sale.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn – 70% Off

Another excellent option for tactical RPG fans is Tactics Ogre: Reborn, currently available for $14.99.
The campaign follows Denam through a political conflict where important decisions can change the story, characters who join the army, and eventually the ending. Battles take place on detailed tactical maps where classes, equipment, and skills all come into play.
Reborn also makes experimenting with different outcomes much easier. The Chariot Tarot lets you rewind actions during combat, while the World Tarot eventually allows you to return to earlier points in the story without losing the characters and progression already earned.
There is a lot to dig into here, especially if you enjoy building a large roster and trying different class combinations.
Fantasian Neo Dimension – 60% Off

Let’s close with Fantasian Neo Dimension, the RPG from Mistwalker led by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, with music composed by Nobuo Uematsu.
Its turn-based combat has a neat twist: the trajectory of many attacks can be manually adjusted. Curving a spell or skill can let it pass through several enemies, so positioning and targeting become part of deciding how to use each turn.
The world is equally distinctive. More than 150 areas use real handcrafted dioramas as backgrounds, giving towns and environments a look that immediately stands apart from most modern JRPGs.
Neo Dimension expanded the original release with English and Japanese voice acting, Normal and Hard difficulty settings, and additional features. The current 60% discount brings it down to $19.99.
