Grifford Academy is making its Early Access debut next month, and there’s a brand-new demo and trailer out now that give a solid taste of what to expect. I’ve been following this one, and if you’re into turn-based RPGs with strong character arcs and emotional depth, this might be worth checking out.
Developed by LandShark Games, the game follows three teens, Erika, Viva, and Cap, as they tumble into the mysterious realm of Caldria, a magical book-world full of danger, memories, and self-discovery. This RPG promises to put a lot of emphasis on personal growth, not just in terms of stats and gear, but in the way characters evolve based on your choices.
According to LandShark founder Paul Naylor, the team set out to strip away bloated RPG systems and focus on what makes the genre emotionally engaging: tactical combat tied closely to character relationships and narrative. The Early Access release will include the full story, with the team using this period to smooth out rough edges, refine mechanics, and take in community feedback, though they’re being selective about what gets added or changed.
The new demo already highlights the game’s core strengths: challenging but approachable combat, a charming and readable art style, and a coming-of-age story that doesn’t feel tacked on. Each party member brings emotional baggage into battle, literally, with your decisions helping shape who they become over time.
Also worth noting is the soundtrack. It features original music from Pearl Yim, Kiat from Syndicate, and IMBA, which gives the whole game a distinctive and moody vibe that fits its mix of fantasy and teen drama.
