Rogue Waters September 2024

As we close the chapter on Gamescom 2024, I have to say it wasn’t particularly thrilling for me—except for the Future Games Show. That event delivered some intriguing new trailers and a few noteworthy announcements for new videogames set to launch in September.

September 2024 is shaping up to be a powerhouse month for RPGs and strategy games, with a surprising number of them sharing the same release date. It’ll be interesting to see how fans juggle their choices when the time comes. I’ve compiled a list of all the major upcoming releases, along with a deeper look into some of the most noteworthy ones, in my opinion. Below, you’ll find a detailed breakdown of these standout titles, followed by the complete list with their respective platforms and release dates.

This month, at least 25 must-play Turn-Based video games are to be considered across PC and consoles.

Kicking off the month is Necroking, a roguelite that’s nothing short of incredible. With charming pixel art, this deckbuilder puts you as a necromancer battling humans and other foes. You’ll lead and unlock various undead units—skeletons, vampires, specters, and more—as you lay siege to villages, cities, and castles. The combat system is uniquely designed, featuring four slots for summoning creatures that then face off against enemy units. I’ve spent a few hours with it, and I’m having an absolute blast.

But the game I’m most excited about is Rogue Waters, a newly announced tactical RPG from the developers of Hard West 2. In this game, you take on the role of a cursed pirate captain with the freedom to sail the seas, engage in naval battles, and board enemy vessels for intense close-quarters combat, with the option to summon massive sea creatures. Staying in the RPG realm, I can’t overlook Greedfall 2, even though it’s an RTWP (real-time with pause) title.

The second installment in the Greedfall series has completely overhauled its combat system, offering a more tactical experience where you can take your time to issue commands to your allies and control the battlefield. It’s worth noting that Greedfall 2 will be launching in early access.

Another standout, at least in terms of setting and graphic style, is Beyond Galaxyland, which promises to be a delightful space RPG adventure, featuring planets to save and a quirky cast of heroes. The combat system is inspired by Final Fantasy, with an ATB-style system that includes timing mechanics for defense and attacks. The setting is fantastic, and I can’t wait to dive into it.

The month is also packed with JRPGs, including Keylocker, Cricket: Jae’s Really Peculiar Game, and The Nameless – Slay Dragon are some of them. However, the crown might go to Bloomtown: A Different Story, a Persona-influenced RPG that integrates life-simulator dynamics. Expect an intriguing story, meaningful relationships with NPCs, a world with a dark side to explore, and monsters to capture and use in classic-style battles where exploiting weaknesses is critical.

As for roguelites, Necroking is just one of many debuting this month in this love-it-or-hate-it genre. Titles like Roots of Yggdrasil, Pyrene, Dark Sky, and EcoGnomix are also on the horizon. Perhaps the standout here is Breachway, a space roguelite that’s long been delayed but might finally see the light of day in September 2024. It boasts a unique art style and beautifully designed spacecraft, which is why I’ve been keeping an eye on it.

For those who crave strategy, World of Aria is a multiplayer-focused game with a fantastic cartoony art style, offering a board game-like experience where you can ally, fight, and betray your companions—hopefully without ruining friendships. Then there’s Ara: History Untold, which aims to be a serious competitor to Civilization VII. While I’m not entirely sure about its gameplay innovations, the graphical style is undeniably impressive.

Ara: History Untold might be a severe Civ Competitor.

And finally, several intriguing RPGs will be entering early access, such as Dragonero, Silence of the Siren (a sci-fi Heroes of Might and Magic-like game), and Umbra: The Last Summoner. I almost forgot to mention the new DLC for Rogue Trader, which expands one of the best isometric RPGs of recent times. I’m sure I’ve missed something, but you can find the full list below for all the platform details and release dates.
