Nightbound - 2d Survival RPG

The game I’m introducing today has officially joined my personal list of most anticipated titles, and it has forcefully claimed one of the top spots.

It’s called Nightbound, it’s being developed by Crooked Cats Studio, and it’s a horror-tinged RPG featuring a 2D combat system, management mechanics, and a character bonding system. And I almost forgot: it also boasts some absolutely gorgeous pixel art. Now, let me give you some more details about it.

Nightbound RPG

Nightbound is a narrative-driven tactical game in which two strangers are forced to live together in the last house on Earth after civilization ended with a being named the Bloom. The game, now available to wishlist on Steam for an early 2027 release on PC, is a single-player RPG.

Nightbound focuses on Loren, who has protected her family’s home from the Bloom. She is then joined by Jun, and she realizes that they have no choice but to help each other. They don’t want to fight against the post-apocalyptic threat; they need to fix their van and get out of there toward the mountain sanctuary where they believe the Bloom cannot find them.

Nightbound gameplay sequence

Gameplay features a daytime/nighttime cycle centered on the house. While it is light outside, Jun and Loren have opportunities to cook, fix up their home, work on their vehicle, play arcade-style video games, and spend time with each other.

Choices made in this quiet period will impact their relationship and dictate how well they function as a team later that evening.

Once night falls, the house becomes the focus point of defensive tactics as the Bloom comes closer. The campaign consists of twelve uniquely crafted nights. Each night offers different environmental challenges, different enemies, and different ways that those enemies act, allowing the player to study their behavior before taking action.

Nightbound Choices To Take

As such, what they do during the day will influence how likely they are to survive each successive nighttime attack.

Both characters are controlled by the player using the same pool of command points. The combat mechanics include manual aim; head shots; cover systems; and intercepting fire. Players are encouraged to coordinate their survivor efforts rather than treating them as separate entities. A large portion of each battle seems to involve positioning one character behind or near another to either protect or assist them.

As the players work together, they unlock new cooperative options referred to as “Potentials”, customized abilities that allow Jun and Loren to heal each other, intercept incoming attacks, lay down suppressive fire for each other, and take many other actions based upon their growing relationship.

Nightbound Combat System

According to Crooked Cats Studio, Nightbound is a character-based escape story, not a typical save-the-world adventure.

It blends a late-80’s aesthetic with a cinematic look that includes heavy use of fog, film grain, realistic lighting effects, and an original soundtrack, all to create a sense of closeness among characters as they seek hope in a crumbling world.

There will be a playable demo for Windows during Steam Next Fest in October 2026. At launch, Nightbound will run on both Windows PCs and Steam Deck devices. Currently, Nightbound lists its full release on Steam for sometime in Q1 2027.
