That’s the best May 2024 Has To Offer In Terms Of Turn-Based RPGs and Strategy Games

It seems like May could easily be one of the best months of 2024 for a host of promising RPGs and strategy games ready to launch on PC. Today, I’ve gathered some of the most interesting ones, and I assure you that if you’re a fan of the genre, it will be hard not to find something tempting.

A new title in the King Arthur series, some very interesting roguelites, significant strategy games like Songs of Conquest (to which I will certainly dedicate many hours), and then two very interesting tactical games, one that puts us in the shoes of superheroes and the other catapults us into the past, and right alongside all this abundance, there’s also the release of a retro RPG you absolutely need to check out. But to find out more, you’ll need to read the article. Let’s go

King Arthur: Legion IX – 9 May

2022’s King Arthur: Knight’s Tale was a fun, dark take on the legends of Camelot, so we’re excited to see the follow-up in Legion IX. This time, you’ll be taking the role of a cursed Roman general, Gaius Julius Mento. After centuries in the underworld, Mento and his legion find their way to Avalon, and set about trying to reconquer Britannia for the glory of Rome.

Legion IX Gameplay

Enemies from the original game return, and you’ll also be squaring off against the heroes from Knight’s Tale. It’s a great way to expand on the series’ lore – hopefully the first of many.

Rogue Voltage – 10 May E.A.

If you’re tired of endlessly shuffling decks of cards or hoping for just the right starting gear in your roguelites, Rogue Voltage has some fresh new ideas for you. In this indie deckbuilder, you power your team by placing and connecting circuit-board components. There’s only so much power in the system, though, so you’ll need to decide where to allocate your resources.

Rogue Voltage Roguelite

Roguelites in particular are a genre that needs a constant flow of new ideas to keep from becoming stale, and Horizont Computergrafik is doing their part. Rogue Voltage enters early access later this month, and you can try the free demo right now.

StarCrawlers Chimera – 13 May

Cyberpunk 2077 will go down as one of the most memorable games of the decade, but it was missing something important – that’s right, turn-based combat. StarCrawlers Chimera might not have jaw-dropping realism or Keanu Reeves, but it offers a first-person dystopian RPG for all you Turn Based Lovers.

Starcrawlers Chimera RPG

StarCrawlers centers around a single, dangerous job; entering a monolithic pharma company’s headquarters and extracting an important scientist. Naturally, the place is crawling with security, not to mention mutants and bioweapons created by the company’s experiments. You can play the early access version now, or check out the launch build when it releases on the 13th.

Songs Of Conquest – 20 May

Songs Of Conquest is a must for any fan of classic Heroes Of Might And Magic. From its beautiful pixel art to its streamlined hex-based combat, this is an evolution of HOMM‘s iconic gameplay. With four distinct, unique factions and a freeform magic system where your army composition determines which spells you can cast, Songs Of Conquest is not to be missed.

Songs Of Conquest

Developer Lava Potion had a very fruitful early access period, and after two years the game is ready to launch. Between the faction campaigns and skirmish maps – to say nothing of multiplayer – there’s plenty of conquering to be done, and songs to be written about it.

Songs Of Silence – 23 May E.A.

Once exciting early-access ends, and another begins. Songs Of Silence uses auto battler mechanics to resolve combat as you venture forth to explore a lush fantasy 4X map. With its stunning visuals and music composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles), Songs Of Silence should prove to be one of the most evocative titles of the year.

Songs of Silence

If the free demo is any indication, Songs Of Silence‘s early access will leave us waiting eagerly for the full game.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord – 23 May

The importance of the original Wizardry cannot be understated. Its gameplay and dungeon crawling inspired the creators of almost every foundational RPG, including Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

Wizardry Remake Gameplay

Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a full remake of the original adventure; while it has fully modern graphics, the gameplay that created a genre is still the same. If you’re feeling nostalgic, you can even switch to the original Apple II interface for the authentic experience.

Spellcats: Auto Card Tactics – 17 May

Spellcats is a small, quirky game with mysteries to unravel. As the world’s only sentient cat, you’ll wield magic to free your fellow felines from humans’ oppression… and make some discoveries about the hidden origins of your species along the way.

Spellcats Deckbuilding

A card-based autobattler, Spellcats lets you deploy 100 different cards, creating combos and chains to defeat the evil Nekocasters. Cat lovers and card gamers alike should have plenty of fun with this one.

C.A.R.D.S. RPG: The Misty Battlefield – 23 May

The Misty Battlefield is Fire Emblem meets Slay The Spire, two beloved styles of gameplay that work fantastically well together. Leading your squad across battlefields wracked by magic, you’ll engage soldiers and monsters in an attempt to end a century-long war.

CARDS RPG Game

This title has all the trappings of a great JRPG war story, so if you love tales like Valkyria Chronicles or Tactics Ogre, C.A.R.D.S RPG could be your next favorite. A demo is available to try ahead of the game’s release toward the end of May.

Crown Wars – 23 May

If you like the grid-based combat in King Arthur, Legion IX, more medieval mayhem will be coming your way right about the time you finish up the campaign. Crown Wars puts players in the midst of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, building your castle and fighting against a shadowy conspiracy.

Crown Wars

Medieval warfare was brutal, and Crown Wars holds nothing back as characters unleash merciless finishers. Alternately, you can capture enemy combatants, keeping them around for bonuses or ransoming them for cash. Try the free demo ahead of launch!

Capes – 29 May

Marvel’s Midnight Suns showed what a great match XCOM-style combat is for superhero stories, and Capes will only prove the point further. With a cast of original characters and dazzling superpowers, Capes could end up being the Invincible of strategy games.

Capes RPG Turn-Based

Set in a city dominated by supervillains, you’ll assemble a team of heroes making one last attempt to put an end to their reign of terror. It’s also available on the Switch, so you can play it on the go!

SKALD: Against The Black Priory – 30 May

If Dark Fantasy is your jam, then you definitely won’t want to miss out on Skald. Inspired by classic ’90s CRPGs, this quest puts you in the middle of a dangerous world overrun by cosmic horrors. The turn-based combat is brought to life with colorful pixel animations, and you can choose a stealthy or loud approach as you explore.

SKALD

With twelve classes to choose from and endless challenges from the Black Priory’s monstrous denizens, Skald is an RPG adventure that will keep you coming back from victory or defeat to give it one more go.
