Heroes of Might & Magic is a series originally created and developed by Jon Van Caneghem through New World Computing.

The Heroes of Might & Magic series brought this kind of games to great success where you have to wander around the map to gather resources and recruit soldiers to use in battles. Battles usually take place on maps that resemble a chessboard. In addition to this, there is also the building component of the cities, which as they grow up give access to increasingly powerful units.

Very similar to the 4X strategy games but always with a particular eye to the RPG component. This series was an inspiration for many other titles that have replicated the mechanics.

Below is a list of all the games like Heroes of Might & Magic (HOMM) including all the HOMM games too in order of release date. All the games on this list have more than one of these distinctive elements of the series:

  • Maps to explore
  • Gathering resources
  • Developing and managing economy
  • Recruiting units
  • Turn-based battles
  • Rpg elements

  1. Why Master of Magic isn’t enlisted, but other fantasy Civ-like games are here? And Endless Legend too? Warlock 1-2? Battle for Wesnoth?

    • Hi Andrew. Thanks for your suggestion. We will update the article with Master of Magic. As for the other mentioned titles, they are included in the Civ-Like games (4x). We will prepare a list with these games soon. Thank you again and if you want, you can help us with creating content on the blog.
