New Turn-Based RPGs to Play - September 6, 2025

Here’s the first September 2025 recap, covering all the new releases on PC and console in the world of turn-based RPGs, strategy games, and roguelites.

September has always felt like a reset month for me, a time for new goals and good intentions. Usually, I tell myself I’ll pick up a healthy habit, like finally starting to go to the gym. Needless to say, I’m forty now and have completely failed at that one, but hey, it’s still nice to set goals, even if they don’t stick.

One goal I can actually reach, though, is getting back to work on my YouTube channel, which has been on pause for nearly a month. Starting today at 6 pm CET, I’m back with a new video, and for now, Saturdays will be the dedicated upload day.

With that said, let’s take a look at what’s new in these first days of September; you might just find your next game to play.

Overlooting

  • Developer: Posing Possums
  • Release Date: 1 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Overlooting

Let’s start with Overlooting. An RPG that blends turn-based combat with roguelite structure and a heavy focus on inventory management.

Each item you equip can unlock synergies and set bonuses, with a shifting skill tree. The launch looks very strong, with the first Very Positive reviews on Steam backing it up.

Crossed Commands: Collision (E.A.)

  • Developer: SlightQuartz
  • Release Date: 3 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Crossed Commands: Collision (E.A.)

I also included it in the September recap because I find it particularly interesting, given how clearly it draws inspiration from one of the greatest recent strategy titles: Into the Breach.

It’s called Crossed Commands: Collision, and it gives you control over a pilot of modular mechs, where you salvage parts from battlefield encounters to rebuild and customize your squad for each mission.

In Early Access now, the game offers six factions, over a hundred customizable components, and evolving map hazards, perfect if you enjoy tactical depth and crafting your ideal war machine.

If you’re not into early access games, it’s still one that definitely deserves a spot on your wishlist for now.

Aegis Force: The Scorian War (New Expanded Demo)

  • Developer: Deseret Games Studio, Ellipsii
  • Release Date: 2 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Aegis Force: The Scorian War (New Expanded Demo)

Just this week, another title I’ve been keeping an eye on expanded its demo with a brand-new trailer. It’s the classics-inspired Aegis Force: The Scorian War.

The retro-inspired tactical JRPG has a new demo featuring a reworked prologue and the start of Chapter 1. With grid-based combat, recruitable allies, and story choices, it channels classics like Final Fantasy Tactics while adding fresh content and polish.

I think it’s a title worth adding to the wishlist, and, more importantly, worth trying out, which I’ll be doing myself this weekend.

Manacaster (E.A.)

  • Developer: Manacaster Games
  • Release Date: 3 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Manacaster

Next on the list is Manacaster, a streamlined card-battler that purposely avoids mechanics like mana screw, power creep, and microtransactions. The Early Access launch includes modes like Rogue Mode, where you explore a map of elemental and hybrid nodes, PvP, and AI practice.

The balance is tight and mathematical, with roughly nine hundred unique cards available for both Constructed and Draft formats.

Featuring one-of-a-kind 50-card decks, a unique mana system, and full player-driven development feedback, this deckbuilder seems to me a game tailored for advanced card players.

Fantasy Football Tactics Demo

  • Developer: John Lansing
  • Release Date: 4 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Fantasy Football Tactics

If you’ve been following my recap articles, you know I also spotlight newly released demos. This time, there’s a particularly intriguing title, one that, for me personally (and I’d bet for the vast majority of Final Fantasy fans), instantly brings to mind that unforgettable side game Blitzball.

The game is called Fantasy Football Tactics, an indie project whose visual style clearly nods to Final Fantasy Tactics. But instead of taking down enemies, your goal is to score on a fantastical football field.

You assemble a 4v4 team from eight distinct positions (like Balancer, Caster, Striker, Gamebreaker), each with unique skills, and then compete across four main quests, optional side missions, and endless Grind or Quick Match modes, both locally and via Remote Play Together, all set against a backdrop of charm.

Dark Deity 2 Launches Today on Nintendo

  • Developer: Sword & Axe LLC
  • Release Date: 4 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch
  • Steam Page
Dark Deity 2

Then there’s a now well-known SRPG series that first made its mark on PC and this week has landed on Nintendo Switch. Dark Deity 2 brings its pixel-art, Fire Emblem–inspired tactical gameplay to the Switch for the first time.

You’ll command the Eternal Delegation through voice-acted, campaign-scale battles 30 chapters strong, with 20 characters, 45 branching classes, customizable synergies, and strategic depth intact.

Whether you’re a returning fan or new to Verroa, the console version delivers the full, critically “Very Positive” experience crafted for handheld players.

Mordfield Command (Demo)

  • Developer: Software Verde
  • Release Date: 2 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Mordfield Command

Don’t say I never cover purely strategy-focused titles. This week, I’ve got a particularly interesting one for you: Mordfield Command. Along with confirming its October release date, the developers have also launched a playable demo.

The game mixes 4X strategy, wave defense, and turn-based combat: you’ll build fortified bases, expand with satellite cities, and manage scarce resources against an ever-growing machine threat.

Each turn demands careful use of action points, with procedurally generated maps and optional 15- or 30-second timers to keep the pressure on.

The demo features a 75-round cap and limited resources, while the full version will include a story campaign, PvP, co-op, and even a map editor.

Space Scum (Play Test)

  • Developer: Sole Survivor Games
  • Release Date: 2 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Space Scum RPG

It’s essentially a Battle Brothers–like experience, with one key difference: instead of medieval castles, you’re thrown into deep space and onto planets where you can expect to encounter all kinds of alien wildlife, and all the dangers that come with it.

The game is called Space Scum, and right now it’s running a playtest that will wrap up on September 9.

That means there are still a few days left to try out this survival RPG, which I’ve also been playing to see what sets it apart from Battle Brothers, beyond the obvious fact that instead of wielding a halberd, you can blow enemies’ heads off with a shotgun.

There’s no release date yet, so this playtest is your chance to get a taste of a promising RPG you really shouldn’t miss.

Heads Will Roll: Reforged – Sins of the Floating City

  • Developer: 1917 Studios
  • Release Date: 4 Sep, 2025
  • Platforms: PC
  • Steam Page
Heads Will Roll Downfall

And to wrap up this list of new releases, there’s an RPG from 2023 that’s built a strong following thanks to its depth and complexity. It’s called Heads Will Roll: Reforged, and this week it received a brand-new DLC that pushes the experience even further.

Name of the DLC is Sins of the Floating City and is the fourth major update expansion that plunges you into the heart of the Venice–Genoa conflict with two sweeping new storylines.

As the Doge’s right-hand or a bodyguard to powerful nobles, you’ll weave a web of warfare and intrigue across Italy, France, the Holy Roman Empire, and even Outremer, meeting new characters, engaging in political conspiracies, and exploring romance paths along the way.

It’s a rich, choice-driven narrative bolstered by a free update to the base game that adds mechanics, balance tweaks, and technical improvements.

That’s everything worth keeping an eye on for this week. As always, I’m looking forward to your feedback over on the brand-new Reddit channel, open both to fans of the genre and to developers who want to share their projects. Wishing you a great weekend. Ciao
