You don’t have a ton of time to scoop up some of the best RPGs for pocket change, but hey, no pressure.
As always, I’m here to give you a few ideas on what to pick up while these mid-July 2025 limited-time deals last.
Gamers love a good sale, and it’s always a good feeling to get that game you’ve had your eye on for a bargain price. Of course, sometimes we hold out for a better deal that never comes, or we second-guess whether we’ll actually play the game.
For these 20 Turn-Based RPGs, though, now is the time! We’re unlikely to see discounts better than these on these great games for a long time, and some are truly at rock-bottom prices for a few days. Strike while the iron is hot, Turn Based Lovers; you’ll be glad you did.
Darkest Dungeon II is quite a different beast from its predecessor, with a more straightforward route and a party that more or less sticks with you through to the end… casualties aside, of course. It’s still got plenty of challenge, with harrowing boss fights and skin-of-your-teeth encounters to overcome on your quest for redemption.
Normally $39.99, Darkest Dungeon II is 50% off on Steam until 24 July. The Resolute Edition Bundle, which also includes the Binding Blade and Inhuman Bondage DLCs plus some other goodies, is also on sale for $35.55 (a savings of 41%), which means you can get the complete set to-date for less than the standard price of the base game.
If you’re in the mood for something with a classic vibe, it’s hard to get more retro than Master of Magic. Slitherine’s 2022 edition of the famed 4X might be a remake, but it holds close to the original in a way that will transport you back to the glory days of 1994.
GOG has Master of Magic discounted at 60% off, at $15.99 down from $39.99. The sale only lasts for a few more hours, though, so you’d better act quickly if you want to lock in that price!
Dream Tactics offers a different kind of retro nostalgia, tapping into the classic Fire Emblem titles of the Game Boy Advance for inspiration. True to its name, though, Dream Tactics features a whimsical, brightly-colored world that’s a far cry from the tragic battlefields of yore.
Indie games are usually very affordable, so even at its full price of $17.99 Dream Tactics is a solid pick. It’s 45% off on Steam right now, though, bringing it below $10. If you want even more deals, it’s also part of several discounted bundles, one of which includes the excellent Dark Deity and Symphony of War.
If you’re in the mood for an expansive, open-ended CRPG where your choices shape the story from character creation onward, The Age of Decadence offers lots to explore and tons of replay value. Its skill-based character system provides multiple avenues to overcome most challenges, so there’s usually a way out of any situation if you can find it.
One thing that isn’t decadent about the game is the price; The Age of Decadence is 60% off on Steam until 21 July, going for only $5.99 down from $14.99.
If you’ve got some extra money to spend, you can also get it as part of the Old School CRPG Bundle, which has five deep, immersive games for just under $50. That’s sure to keep you busy for a while and get you your money’s worth!
Desta: The Memories Between isn’t just any tactical RPG. Its surreal, small-map battles take place in the protagonist’s dreams, blending their past memories with, of all things, dodgeball. If you’re looking for something that’s different from the usual swords or shotguns, Desta is a breath of fresh air.
Not only that, but it’s currently available at an unbeatable price; you can get Desta for a whopping 80% off on Steam until 21 July, from $16.99 all the way down to $3.39. It’s also a part of a 75%-off bundle of indie developer ustwo’s collection, including both Monument Valley games, for under $15 total.
If you’d prefer to smash tanks and mechs in a tactical classic, there are always the Front Mission remakes, and right now the second game in the series is 50% off on Steam. Normally $34.99, it’s currently discounted to just $17.49.
Front Mission games all take place in the same universe, but you don’t necessarily need to have played the first one to enjoy the second. Front Mission 2: Remake follows the perspectives of three different protagonists as they attempt to survive a violent coup in the fictional country of Alordesh.
Of course, not every TRPG needs to be about armies clashing. The Spirited Thief blends puzzles with tactical gameplay, challenging the thief Elaj and his ghostly partner Trin to infiltrate secure fortresses and relieve the wealthy of their valuables. It’s trickier than it sounds, and you’ll need to use both character’s abilities in tandem to get away with the loot.
The biggest steal, though, may be the game’s price on Steam right now. At 85% off of its standard price of $14.99, you can get The Spirited Thief for just $2.24 until 28 July. It also appears in a handful of bundles, trading in a bit of discount for more games.
If you’d rather your grid maps see shining armies of knights and wizards clashing on the battlefield, be sure not to miss Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga.
There are plenty of games inspired by Fire Emblem, but Symphony of War‘s unit composition borrows a bit from Ogre Battle to make it a unique blend of the classics.
Symphony of War typically goes for a very reasonable $19.99, but until 24 July, Steam has it at 60% off, down to $7.99. If you’re all-in on the game’s concept, you can get the Deluxe Edition Bundle for 48% off (a total of $13.93), which includes the Legends DLC.
We’re big fans of XCOM here at Turn Based Lovers, and we know you probably are too. If you’re looking for something to try while waiting for any possible news of XCOM 3, why not give the under-the-radar spinoff, XCOM: Chimera Squad, a try?
This character-driven story follows a single XCOM Squad in the aftermath of the second game, trying to keep the peace in City 31. If you love tactical combat, there’s no reason not to give it a try, since it’s only $2.99 on Steam until 24 July; that’s 85% off its usual price of $19.99.
Then again, maybe you’re more the swashbuckling type. In that case, check out Rogue Waters, a tactical roguelite of pirate adventure. Design your ship and crew, then set sail to defeat the villainous Captain Blackbone!
Rogue Waters is a newer game, less than a year old, so it isn’t as heavily discounted as some of the others on this list, but 40% off is still very respectable for a game that only launched in September. Getting a $29.99 game for $17.99 is nothing to sneeze at, so check out the deal on Steam before it goes away on 24 July.
Mysterious, dangerous, and full of intrigue, Subterrain: Mines of Titan is a survival RPG that will have you hooked from the beginning.
Awakening from a stasis pod in an abandoned mine on the moons of Saturn, you’ll have to fend for yourself against the horrors that lurk below while discovering the terrible truth.
Mines of Titan offers plenty of challenge for just $19.99, so it’s even better value at 40% off; you can get it for just $11.99 on Steam until 24 July. It’s also part of a bundle with the original Subterrain game, offering both games for $26.08.
If you still want to explore but with more casual stakes, Of Blades & Tails is a charming turn-based hack-and-slash. It’s got a vibrant, open world brought to life through pixel art, but no permadeath to make you sweat over whether looking around is worth the risk.
This solo project by Felix Laukel is 50% off on Steam until 21 July. Since it’s normally $14.99, that means you can get it for just $7.49 and start your adventure alongside Reik the fox.
For players who want deep, rich stories, Path of the Midnight Sun has all the narrative of the most compelling visual novels with JRPG battles and important choices to make at every turn.
Keeping track of characters’ hunger and mental state is just as important as planning their skills, and there’s also plenty of romance to be found.
You can get Path of the Midnight Sun on Steam for just $11.24 until 25 July, a savings of 55% off its standard price of $24.99. If you spring for the Collector’s Edition, which includes the soundtrack and artbook, it’s only a little bit more at $12.87, but a greater total savings of 57%.
Speaking of managing loadouts, there are few games that have more customization than mecha battlers, and tactical roguelite Mech Armada positively spoils you for choices when it comes to designing your stompy war machines.
You’ll need to choose your gear carefully as you set up each mission to fight the kaiju-like Swarm, and prepare for massive boss fights in addition to the usual tactical battles.
Mech Armada has a demo available, but from now until 24 July, the game itself is 80% off on Steam. At just $3.99 down from $19.99, it’s worth considering just picking up the game outright.
If you’re looking for your next JRPG epic, now is the time to try Astria Ascending if you haven’t already. Not only does it have lovely visuals and a gripping story, but it follows mature, developed characters – no plucky teenagers off to save the world this time.
Astria Ascending is normally a bit on the pricier side of indie games at $34.99, but until 30 July Steam has it at 90% off so you can get it for just $3.49. If you want to get the Collector’s Edition, with extra cosmetics plus the artbook and soundtrack, that’s just $6.40.
Speaking of deeply discounted JRPGs, Cris Tales is also 90% off on Steam, down from $39.99 to just $3.99. This stylish, animated tale of twisted timelines has the makings of a modern classic, so if you haven’t had a chance to try it out yet this sale is a great opportunity.
Crisbell’s story is inspired by the greats, from Chrono Trigger to Final Fantasy VI and Valkyrie Profile, but it does a great job of carving out a space all its own. The discount only lasts until 21 July, so don’t wait for this one.
If you want something with a bit more edge, both literally and figuratively, Red Ronin is like a turn-based samurai Hotline Miami. Each turn, you’ll zip across the combat grid with your katana flashing, slicing up bad guys in a quest for revenge, but a single miscalculation can end your rampage.
Red Ronin is normally pretty affordable at just $7.99, but until 21 July Steam has it at 60% off, taking it down to just $3.19. You can also get it in a few bundles, picking up several games for under $15.
For something that’s fun for all ages, it’s hard to go wrong with Born of Bread. This animated RPG adventure puts you in the role of Loaf, a flour golem, our to solve problems and save the world. If you’re a fan of the Mario RPGs, especially their charming humor, this is one to try.
You can get Born of Bread for 70% off on Steam until 30 July; normally $24.99, it’s available for just $7.49. It’s also part of several bundles with other fun, funny RPGs if you’re looking for a two-for-one deal.
For those who like it as grimdark as possible, Hellslave has all the demons, blood, and accursed nighmares you could want.
Fighting hellfire with hellfire, your character makes a pact with the Devil to fight back against the demons destroying the world. Now it’s up to you to fight your way through dangerous dungeons and save humanity, at the cost of your soul.
Hellslave usually goes for $19.99, but you can get it for just $5.99 on Steam until 30 July, saving 70%. That’s a lot better of a deal than your character gets in the game!
Finally, Those Who Rule follows the story of three recruits in a fantasy world torn apart by war. Their decisions will shape the fate of the nation… if the conflict doesn’t destroy them first. With hex-based battles and Fire Emblem-style progression, Those Who Rule asks hard questions of its protagonists that might not have right answers.
If you want to give Those Who Rule a try, it’s 30% off on Steam until 25 July. That means you can get it for $12.59, where normally it would be $17.99.
If you’re looking for a few extra SRPGs to add to your collection, it’s also part of a bundle with Kingsvein and Our Adventurer Guild, saving 10% on the total of all three titles.
