I grew up on JRPGs during the golden PlayStation era. Xenogears, The Legend of Dragoon, Shadow Hearts, and Breath of Fire were just a few of my all-time favorites. Back then, the genre offered an incredible variety of experiences and was absolutely booming, a trend that would continue for many years.
Then came a noticeable decline in turn-based RPGs, but thankfully, the genre has made a strong comeback, which is exactly why I’m here: to recap some of the most exciting upcoming JRPGs currently in development that capture the spirit of the classics so many of us grew up loving.
Some of the games below already have firm release dates, while others are still sitting in that dangerous TBA zone.
This list focuses on upcoming JRPGs and RPGs inspired by them, and a few hybrids that sit close enough to the genre to deserve attention. Release information is current as of now, but as always with upcoming games, dates may shift.
Final Fantasy Resonance
- Developer: Square Enix / Lancarse
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Release Date: October 22, 2026
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Final Fantasy Resonance is easily one of the biggest names on this list, especially because it marks the series’ first HD-2D entry.
Resonance brings back turn-based battles, while reworking the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a standalone premium RPG. The story follows Rain, Lasswell, and Fina across Lapis, with exploration, summons, and modernized systems built around party planning.
For players still waiting for a new Final Fantasy that feels closer to the series’ command-driven roots, this is one to watch closely finally.
Persona 6
- Developer: P-Studio / ATLUS
- Publisher: SEGA / ATLUS
- Release Date: TBA
- Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, Xbox Game Pass
- Steam Page

Persona 6 is included here as a major watchlist entry even if we still don’t have a confirmed 2026 or 2027 release date.
ATLUS and SEGA have officially announced the next mainline Persona, but the release date is still listed as TBD. That said, it is impossible to ignore. Persona remains one of the most influential modern JRPG series, mixing social simulation, dungeon crawling, supernatural mystery, and stylish turn-based combat.
Until ATLUS shows the battle system in detail, we only have the promise of a new mainline entry, but that alone is enough to make it one of the most anticipated RPGs currently in development.
Tactics of Scarlet
- Developer: Wolf of Scarlet
- Publisher: Wolf of Scarlet
- Release Date: 2027
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Tactics of Scarlet aims directly at players who still miss the compact, readable, and character-driven tactical RPGs of the Game Boy Advance era.
The game is described as a Japanese-style tactical RPG with multiple campaigns, grid-based battles, and a fantasy setting built around war, loyalty, and personal stakes. What makes it interesting is not just the nostalgia angle, but the promise of three separate campaigns, which could give the story a broader view of its conflict.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World
- Developer: Square Enix / TOSE
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Release Date: December 3, 2026
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World brings back one of Square Enix’s most beloved monster-taming branches.
Instead of focusing on a traditional hero’s journey, here is building teams, befriending monsters, raising them, and combining them through synthesis to create stronger companions.
The Withered World looks ready to continue the Dragon Quest Monster identity with a new adventure and a large roster of creatures to discover.
Descent Of Lunaris
- Developer: Unison Games
- Publisher: Unison Games
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Descent Of Lunaris is aimed at a very specific type of JRPG fan: the one who enjoys getting lost in dangerous first-person dungeons, mapping routes, managing resources, and surviving one encounter at a time.
The game draws inspiration from dungeon crawlers such as Wizardry and Shin Megami Tensei, combining grid-based exploration with turn-based combat.
Gravastar
- Developer: Studio Atma
- Publisher: TBA
- Release Date: TBA
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Gravastar is one of the more stylish JRPG-inspired projects currently on the radar. Studio Atma describes it as a Japanese-inspired sci-fi fantasy RPG, featuring a conditional turn-based battle system that takes cues from 2D fighting games.
Rather than relying only on menus and cooldowns, Gravastar appears to be chasing a more kinetic rhythm while still keeping battles within a turn-based framework. With its party of companions, sci-fi fantasy setting, and sharp visual identity, it has strong hidden gem potential, even if the release window is still unconfirmed.
Threads of Time
- Developer: Riyo Games
- Publisher: Humble Games / Balor Games
- Release Date: TBA
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
- Steam Page

Threads of Time wears its inspirations proudly. It is a 2.5D, time-traveling, turn-based RPG clearly built for players who still hold Chrono Trigger and classic Final Fantasy close to their hearts.
The premise sends players across different eras, gathering heroes from multiple points in history while uncovering a larger threat tying everything together. The visual direction is also a major part of the appeal, using modern 2.5D presentation to reframe the familiar structure of a classic JRPG adventure.
No release date has been confirmed yet, but this is one of the most obvious wishlist candidates for genre fans. I’ve prepared a detailed article here about everything we know so far.
Runa
- Developer: Fennec Studio
- Publisher: Fennec Studio
- Release Date: TBA; Early Access goal previously mentioned for Q4 2026
- Platforms: PC first; console versions planned later
- Steam Page

Runa is another strong indie project for players who like their JRPGs colorful, systems-heavy, and full of side activities.
Inspired by classic and modern JRPGs, it mixes turn-based battles with social links, elemental puzzles, base building, farming, fishing, and cooking. The idea seems to be a broader adventure where party relationships, exploration, and life-sim touches sit next to traditional battles.
The developers have mentioned a Q4 2026 Early Access goal, but they have also clarified that the timing is not set in stone, so it is better treated as a promising TBA project for now.
Saveseeker
- Developer: Paper Sword Games
- Publisher: Paper Sword Games
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Saveseeker has one of the more personal hooks. It follows Emmer Edette, a time-traveling girl trying to save the world from her own father.
The game combines turn-based RPG combat with a story about rewriting fate, visiting different lands, and recruiting former enemies into the party. Its tone looks lighter on the surface, helped by the presence of Tippleton, a dragon toy companion, but the premise suggests a journey with heavier emotional stakes underneath. Saveseeker could be worth tracking.
Persona 4 Revival
- Developer: ATLUS / P-Studio
- Publisher: SEGA / ATLUS
- Release Date: February 18, 2027
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
- Steam Page

Persona 4 Revival brings one of ATLUS’ most beloved RPGs back for a new generation. The original Persona 4 turned the rural town of Inaba into the stage for a murder mystery, a supernatural TV world, and one of the most memorable casts in the series.
Revival gives ATLUS the chance to modernize that experience while keeping the core identity intact: school life by day, dungeon crawling by night, and turn-based Persona battles against Shadows.
For many players, this will be the first time experiencing Inaba in a fully modernized form. For others, it will be a worthy return trip.
Celestial of Dolls
- Developer: KumaPaw
- Publisher: KumaPaw
- Release Date: 2027
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Celestial of Dolls brings tactical RPG structure into a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting. The game is set inside a vast megastructure, where players command a squad of humanoid fighters while managing a mobile base and making choices that can lead to multiple endings.
Its mixture of anime-style presentation, turn-based tactics, and survival-leaning worldbuilding gives it a different flavor from the fantasy-heavy SRPGs that usually dominate the genre. It is still an indie project to monitor carefully, but the premise alone makes it stand out among 2027 tactical RPGs.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave
- Developer: Intelligent Systems / Nintendo
- Publisher: Nintendo
- Release Date: September 17, 2026
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the next major entry in Nintendo’s long-running tactical RPG series. The story revolves around the Heroic Games, a brutal tournament where the winner is granted one wish, while the larger world is shaped by the Dagdan Empire and its long relationship with the gods.
More importantly for series fans, Nintendo has already shown turn-based tactical RPG gameplay, confirming that the new entry keeps the strategic foundation that defines Fire Emblem.
With Switch 2 as its platform, Fortune’s Weave could also become one of the system’s key RPG releases in 2026.
SacriFire
- Developer: Pixelated Milk
- Publisher: Pixelated Milk
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

SacriFire has been on JRPG fans’ wishlists for a long time, and for good reason. Pixelated Milk is building a 90s-inspired RPG with elaborate pixel art, music from Motoi Sakuraba, and a battle system that blends real-time movement with turn-based decision-making.
That hybrid approach makes it slightly different from a pure menu-based RPG, but the structure, tone, and inspirations are clearly rooted in classic Japanese RPG design. The world is split between Antioch and Erebus, with character growth, weapon crafting, puzzles, and dungeons all feeding into the larger adventure.
Manafinder II
- Developer: Wolfsden LLC
- Publisher: Wolfsden LLC
- Release Date: Q1 2027
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Manafinder II follows up the original with another console-style RPG focused on party building and traditional turn-based combat.
The game promises a compact adventure, with a main story estimated at around 10 to 12 hours and optional content extending that further. Battles emphasize weapon selection, elemental affinities, and party composition, while the world itself moves into a future without mankind.
It may not be the flashiest name on the list, but it could hit the right note for players who prefer shorter, focused JRPG-inspired adventures over massive 80-hour commitments.
Lost Hellden
- Developer: Artisan Studios
- Publisher: Kwalee / Artisan Studios
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Lost Hellden is another hybrid entry, but its JRPG identity is clear. Artisan Studios describes it as an action JRPG with a phased battle system that blends turn-based and real-time combat.
The game also brings together a notable creative team, including art direction from Takeshi Oga and music from Hitoshi Sakimoto.
With eight playable characters, more than 20 jobs, skill trees, and a fantasy world shaped by sin and fate, Lost Hellden looks like a really promising JRPG to look for.
Brigandine Abyss
- Developer: adglobe
- Publisher: NIS America / Happinet
- Release Date: August 26, 2026 on PC; August 27, 2026 on consoles
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Brigandine Abyss is a major name for strategy RPG fans. The Brigandine series has always lived somewhere between grand strategy and tactical RPG, asking players to command nations, move forces across a map, and resolve battles through unit positioning and long-term planning.
Abyss brings that formula back for modern platforms, and its presence alone makes 2026 more interesting for players who want something larger than a standard party-based JRPG. With NIS America handling the release in the West, this could be one of the year’s most important SRPG revivals.
Another Eden Begins
- Developer: WRIGHT FLYER STUDIOS
- Publisher: WRIGHT FLYER STUDIOS
- Release Date: September 16, 2026 on Steam
- Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Another Eden Begins turns the long-running Another Eden universe into a premium time-traveling RPG.
Command battles, multiple endings, New Game Plus, and a party system built around attackers, supports, healers, and the Another Force mechanic. Masato Kato’s involvement also gives the project an obvious link to classic time-travel JRPG storytelling. Begins could be the clean entry point the series needs.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
- Developer: Nihon Falcom
- Publisher: Nihon Falcom / GungHo Online Entertainment America / Clouded Leopard Entertainment
- Release Date: September 17, 2026
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter continues the modern remake project for one of Falcom’s most important RPG arcs.
Estelle’s journey across Liberl continues as she searches for Joshua and becomes increasingly entangled with Ouroboros. For newcomers, this is part of the best entry point into the larger Trails universe.
For veterans, it is a chance to revisit one of the series’ strongest stories with an updated presentation and expanded combat options.
Cross Reverie
- Developer: Sinxsoft
- Publisher: Sinxsoft
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Cross Reverie is a character-focused JRPG-inspired adventure with turn-based battles, multiple routes, and replay value built around different outcomes.
The story follows eight combatants drawn into a dreamlike conflict, while battles emphasize combinations, weaknesses, and finishers. Its smaller scale could actually work in its favor, especially if the game delivers on its promise of a focused cast and meaningful replay structure.
For players who enjoy indie RPGs that feel handmade rather than overly polished, Cross Reverie is one of the 2026 projects worth keeping on the backlog radar.
Culdcept BEGINS
- Developer: Omiya Soft / NEOS Corporation
- Publisher: NEOS Corporation
- Release Date: July 16, 2026 on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2; Steam version TBD
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC
- Steam Page

Culdcept BEGINS is not a traditional JRPG, but it absolutely belongs to Japanese RPGs. The series mixes card battling, board-game movement, territory control, and creature summoning into something that has always felt like its own genre.
BEGINS brings that formula back with a new entry for Switch, Switch 2, and a planned PC version.
Prisma
- Developer: Dreams Uncorporated
- Publisher: Dreams Uncorporated
- Release Date: TBA
- Platforms: PC
- Steam Page

Prisma comes from Dreams Uncorporated, the team behind Cris Tales, and once again leans into a striking visual identity. This time, the story follows Alma, a photojournalist pulled into a strange world where her camera becomes part of the battle system.
The game is described as a 2D Japanese-inspired RPG with turn-based combat built around lenses and filters, giving each fight a photographic twist. The date is still TBA, so it is better treated as a longer-term watchlist pick, but the concept is strong enough to keep it in the conversation.
Forge of the Fae
- Developer: Datadyne
- Publisher: Deck13 Spotlight
- Release Date: 2027
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
- Steam Page

Forge of the Fae is a Celtic folklore-inspired JRPG set in a world shaped by conflict between humans and fae.
Its 1800s Irish influence gives it a different cultural texture from the genre’s usual medieval fantasy or sci-fi settings, while its combat leans into classic turn-based structure with systems such as ARC Crystals and Adrenaline.
The story follows Fiora, and player choices are expected to affect the adventure’s outcome. Between its setting, music, and traditional RPG structure, Forge of the Fae could become one of the more distinctive indie JRPGs of 2027.
DecaPolice
- Developer: LEVEL-5
- Publisher: LEVEL-5
- Release Date: 2026
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2

DecaPolice is one of the most intriguing projects from LEVEL-5’s current lineup. It is described as a crime-suspense RPG, with players investigating cases both in the real world and inside DECASIM, a virtual reconstruction where memories of past crimes can reveal new clues.
Previous gameplay presentations have shown it as a turn-based detective RPG with investigation and combat working together. After several delays and platform changes, DecaPolice still feels like a question mark, but it also remains one of the more original JRPG-adjacent games expected in 202…..
Seed of Nostalgia
- Developer: James Sloan / Primitive Pixels
- Publisher: TBA
- Release Date: TBA
- Platforms: PC, GOG, major consoles planned
- Steam Page

Seed of Nostalgia is exactly what its title suggests: a direct love letter to the JRPGs of the 90s. The game promises classic turn-based battles, timed attacks, no random encounters, eight playable characters, and a story centered on Atilla, the World Tree, and a journey built around old-school adventure structure.
Its Steam page currently lists the release date as TBA, so it should not be treated as a locked 2026 or 2027 title yet. Still, for players who want new RPGs that openly chase the feeling of the SNES and PlayStation era, Seed of Nostalgia is one to follow.
Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories
- Developer: Gust
- Publisher: Koei Tecmo
- Release Date: Early 2027
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
- Steam Page

Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories continues Gust’s long-running alchemy RPG series with a new protagonist and a strong focus on discovery.
Karia is an amnesiac girl who gains knowledge and abilities by eating ingredients, which immediately gives the game a playful identity even by Atelier standards. The official description emphasizes alchemy, item use, exploration, and battles with added strategic depth.
It may not be a strict old-school turn-based JRPG in the most traditional sense, but as a modern Atelier entry with crafting, party growth, and decision-making, it easily belongs on a JRPG watchlist for early 2027.
